The national programme “Circulaire Economie” aims at realizing a circular economy in the Netherlands by 2050. The Dutch government aspires to meet – together with social partners – an interim objective of a 50% reduction in the use of primary resources (mineral, fossil and metal) by 2030. They have also outlined a perspective for 2050 involving a completely efficient use and reuse of resources without any emissions that could harm the environment. The extraction of any new raw materials should take place in a sustainable way, preventing any further damage to our health or our social and physical surroundings. Products and materials should be designed in such a way that they can be reused with as little loss in value as possible and with no harmful emissions to the environment. Chemistry as a sector and knowledge domain plays a pivotal role to help realize these ambitions.
