Dear partner,

Recent research from Top Sector ChemistryNL shows the growing tensions in the supply-chain of raw materials for energy technologies despite the highly important role these will play in the success of Europe’s twin green and digital transitions in 2030 and 2050.

The European Commission’s recently proposed Critical Raw Materials Act, created to safeguard the EU’s access to strategic and critical raw materials, was based on similar insights. The European minerals and metal sector faces huge challenges when it comes to critical raw materials supply and these must be met with decisive actions and widespread cross-sectorial innovations.

Today, the chemistry sector has both a major responsibility and opportunity to deliver innovations to reduce, substitute, recycle, sustainably mine and refine materials to contribute to the energy transition. Think about materials needed for wind technology, green hydrogen and batteries as examples of where chemistry has a role to innovate.

As a Dutch Top Sector*, ChemistryNL drives both knowledge and innovation collaboration at different levels and along different value chains. We are therefore very pleased to announce the ChemistryNL Summit on August 21, endorsed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT RawMaterials).

Bernd Schäfer, CEO, Managing Director, EIT RawMaterials, the managing body of the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA), will examine the current challenges facing the critical raw materials sector in Europe. Reinier Grimbergen, strategic consultant of research organisation TNO will present research data to highlight the criticality of raw materials for the energy transition. And we are delighted that Professor Ben Feringa will co-host an inspiring panel discussion between policy leaders.

Programme

  • In the first part of the summit leading policy makers, influencers and experts will share and discuss their views on the issues and opportunities for Europe and its industry to build a strong sustainable economy and society, in alignment with the Critical Raw Materials Act.
  • In the second part there will be a lively discussion between representatives, entrepreneurs and   value chains experts about promising showcases, smart ideas and what must be prioritized.

Participation of the invited audience is strongly encouraged. Your voice is important because we value your opinion and need you as a partner to build breakthrough innovations, for a sustainable Europe. The summit is timed to align with the IUPAC|CHAINS World Chemistry Congress which will take place from 18-25 August.

* Top sectors are areas in which Dutch industry and research centers worldwide excel. In 10 top sectors, the government, entrepreneurs, researchers and civil society organizations are working together on different challenges.

The IUPAC|CHAINS conference, themed ‘Connecting Chemical Worlds’, brings together all disciplines of chemistry, a diverse audience of chemists from both academia and industry, and from all around the globe. Apart from plenary and invited lectures, the conference will include parallel sessions with oral presentations, focus sessions and poster presentations by junior and senior researchers. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity to visit IUPAC|CHAINS in The Hague NL – World Forum (nextdoor to the Marriot Hotel). Check out the programme, registration fees (special fees for domestic KNCV members etc) on the IUPAC|CHAINS website.
