EU Chemical Industry Transition Pathway

On 27 January 2023, The European Commission published the EU Chemical Industry Transition Pathway. Our industry must change how we produce and what we produce in less than thirty years from now. The challenge is unprecedented and requires billions of investments. This is why Cefic asked the European Commission to develop, together with them and other stakeholders, a dedicated Transition Pathway for our sector. This document lays out all conditions that need to be in place to enable the transformation.

Kerstin Jorna, Director General, DG GROW – European Commission: ‘The chemical industry is a case for policymaking because it’s huge. It’s the fourth industry in Europe. There’s more than a million people employed. There is a challenge when it comes to CO2 emissions. And, it’s an industry that’s the beginning of everything.’

Dr. Martin Brudermüller, Cefic (European Chemical Industry Council) President and CEO of BASF: ‘The successful implementation of this Pathway will define the future of our industry in Europe for the coming decades. We stand ready to work with the European Commission and Member State governments to help make this happen.’

The Transition has four dimensions:

  1. Going circular
  2. Going digital
  3. Going Climate Neutral
  4. Transition to safe and sustainable chemicals

Read more about the EU Chemical Industry Transition Pathway on the Cefic website or join the Transition Talks on Thursday 2 February 10.00 – 11.00 hrs where Kerstin Jorna, Director-General, DG GROW and Marco Mensink, Director General, Cefic will come together to talk about their expectations from the Transition Pathway.
