On May 8, GroenvermogenNL opened its new R&D call for the theme Hydrogen and green electrons for nitrogen-based chemistry. €20.3 million in subsidies are available for this theme. The consortium will work on making the Dutch energy and chemical sector future-proof by using ammonia as an energy carrier and by enabling sustainable synthesis of nitrogen-containing molecules.
Nitrogen-containing chemicals are essential in, among other things, medicines, polymers and fertilizers. Ammonia is often used as a raw material, made from gray hydrogen. The production of gray hydrogen for ammonia accounts for 1.5% of global energy consumption and 7% of Dutch CO₂ emissions.
GroenvermogenNL’s new R&D call focuses on the development and demonstration of cost-effective technologies in which renewable hydrogen and/or green electrons are used to produce nitrogen-containing chemicals.
The R&D project will contribute to the large-scale implementation of these sustainable technologies and put the Netherlands on the international map as a leader in modern nitrogen chemistry.
