The University of Twente’s education initiative CLEAR (Chemistry Learning for Environmental Action and Responsibility) took the next step in early March with the symposium “Future-Proofing CSE for Sustainability.” The event marks the start of the further development of the innovative educational concept for the Bachelor’s program in Chemical Science & Engineering.<\/p>\n

The symposium was organized with funds from the Dutch Education Award 2025, which CLEAR won last year. CLEAR focuses on training chemists who not only have strong subject-matter knowledge but also develop the skills to approach complex sustainability issues from various systems perspectives.<\/p>\n

During the symposium, students, lecturers, and experts gathered to discuss how CLEAR chemistry education can be further developed. A CLEAR Challenge award was also presented to a student project for its proposal for a new Sustainability Analysis lab. Onno de Vreede, HCA coordinator at ChemistryNL, discussed the benefits of systems thinking for the career development of young chemists who have completed the CLEAR program.<\/p>\n
